The favorite order for golfers was the “Tiger Dog,” basically a
hotdog that had a slit down the middle and several horizontal cuts
that, when cooked, opened to look like tiger stripes. The rumor is
that Tom McKitterick brought this to CCL. While I don’t know if
that’s true, I can confidently say it was Tom who taught me how to
make it. And he taught me while wearing a suit coat and standing
over the grill on a scorching, 100+ degree, late-August afternoon.
One last valet story, please?
Geoff Wooledge and I were valets together and he’s still going strong
today! We had this large, white, rolling pegboard that we’d use to
hang keys. There were many nights when every key holder was full!
Being a valet was probably one of my favorite jobs. We interacted
with members and their guests, stayed incredibly busy, drove fun
cars, and the tips were great. One of the scariest moments I had as
a valet was parking a car in a snowstorm one winter. The bottom of
the circle drive had a lot of black ice, and I ended up spinning the
car three times before coming to a stop inches away from another
member’s car. The icing on the cake was that the guest whose car I
was parking was eating in the Grill Dining Room and saw the entire
thing happen! Let’s just say I didn’t get a tip from him that night.
There were a few members who would come in for dinner every
single night and valet. It was so much fun to get to know them and
their families better over the years. One member, in particular, was
so consistent you could set your watch by him. He would arrive at
4:50 p.m., leave his car with Valet, go in for dinner, then be ready to
pick up his car at 5:45 p.m. on the dot with a $5 bill in his hand. Every
day but Monday. We often wouldn’t even move his car, since he was
typically the only person eating at that time!
Ted, now, with Nicole and daughters Stella, standing, and Ruby.
