“I’ve mentioned before that the stretch of holes from 13 to 15
is one of the most underrated upgrades in this remodel, though
it wasn’t widely noted. In our informational meetings, I didn’t
see much excitement about these holes compared to others,”
remarked CCL Golf Course Superintendent Ryan Krings. “Hole 13,
now improved, is a solid par 5 that signals the beginning of a great
stretch of golf. We’ve added more than 20 yards to the championship
tees. Combined with new strategic bunkering, the hole will have a
little more teeth for the lower handicap players. Quitno’s vision for
adjusting the fairway bunkers around the course is impressive, with
Hole 13 serving as a prime example. The new bunker placement is
better suited to current technology and how far players are driving
the golf ball.”
Removing trees between Holes 13 and 15 allowed us to connect
the two fairways, creating a striking new appearance. The views from
the teeing area are stunning, Krings says. “The new green complex
on Hole 13 looks totally different. We removed almost all of the right
side of the old green and expanded the left side closer to the pond.”
This nearly doubles the green’s size and moves the water feature
nearer to the play area. This, combined with the newly relocated
green-side bunkers, has created some exciting pin placements,
enhancing this modern, refreshed look.
Member thoughts about Hole 13
“Through the years Hole 13 at CCL has been a
straightforward par 5. It had a fairly generous fairway
and is in the medium-length category. If you were able
to hit two good shots, it was considered a birdie hole –
probably more reward than risk.
“With our new design on Hole 13, I believe risk to be
more the norm. It will be a little longer, with more well-
placed bunkers and a green design that will require more
precision on either the second shot for longer hitters or
the third shot for most of our members. The water will be
much more in play and require your complete attention.
“Tee choice will be even better than it was before and
very important to our diverse membership. In June the
learning curve starts all over again.”

“Hole 13 has always been one of my favorite holes and I
believe it has only gotten better. Standing on the tee, the
new bunkers on the left are a concern for bigger hitters.
Those players will now have to thread their tee shots
into the slot to the right of the left bunkers. If you are
successful in hitting the fairway, a decision will need to be
made. Knowing the green is now bigger and extended left
and very close to the water will make club selection very
important for those players that might be tempted to go
for the green in two. Even laying up, with a left pin tucked
over the bunker left and water lurking long, your shot to
the green will still cause plenty of stress.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the contours of the
green especially on the left side as I think the new design
will create a lot of thinking, strategy and an exciting par 5.

I’m excited to see how this hole plays with the prevailing
south wind. In my opinion, this hole will give you a wide
range of scores from a 3 to an 8 or even more!”
